Potpurri – Strange Stories in the News

Another Giants loss. Another stupid Giants roster move. What are the Giants thinking, sending down Belt again in favor of DeRosa? If this is his last chance to prove himself, then hurry up, stick him in there, decide what Giants fans already know (that DeRosa is don-zo and probably has been for the past year and whatever), and DFA him. Move on. #FreeBelt

Must console myself with reading some strange stories on the interwebs.  Here’s five gems for ya!

1.  This first one really isn’t that strange because any of my lovely fellow law peeps would tell you that NOTHING…and I mean NOTHING (not even labor) would have kept them from finishing that damn test just to avoid taking it again.  This lady literally went into labor while taking the Illinois Bar.  She was on the afternoon portion of the MBEs (multiple choice from hell for you non-law kids) and experiencing contractions 15 minutes apart.  I knew two people who were pregnant while studying for the Bar. I already had a hard time imagining trying to study while in that delicate state. Imagine taking the test and being in labor! Props, and cute baby!

2.  This one is nothing like the first but good for a giggle.  So one of my cousins and his long time fiancee are getting married in one month from today! Another cousin and I have chatted about what kind of weddings we’d want, and the idea of a destination wedding has come up. I mean, it would be pretty unique, undoubtedly somewhere beautiful…and now I think I’ve found the perfect place!  I mean, who doesn’t wanna have their wedding in Jamaica? I always imagined I’d be a flowing bride in white, donning a veil and a pair of extra sharp incisors…or for Jack Sparrow to declare “I now pronounce you pirate and wench!”  All packages include wedding cake, free t-shirts, and a 5×7 to commemorate the moment that you’ll look back on 10 years and think, “What the hell was I thinking?”

3. People collect coins, stamps, and all sorts of things. I myself have a collection of shotglasses from places I’ve been, and some I bought just because they were unique.  And of course, being a Giants fan I have some bobbleheads but I do not collect them with any sort of regularity.  This is definitely a new one though…people who collect lottery scratchers. Nothing wrong with it in concept…it’s actually kinda cool since I’m sure it’s cool to see how they’ve changed over time. BUT, what about some of these people who collect them and leave them in pristine condition?  I mean, don’t you wanna know what’s underneath that layer of silver, so easily removed using your loose change? It would kill me! 🙂

4. Sounds like these female moose know the system.  Is this protest moaning like the human equivalent of batting eyelashes at or flirting with two guys at once?

5. Good for Ukraine. I’m surprised PETA didn’t get their hands on this story earlier. How does one even get close enough to a bear to force it to drink vodka??

PlumDistrict Discount Code good for this week only

In the age of Groupon, LivingSocial, (and now Google Offers…geez!) etc., PlumDistrict is another company in the running.  Apparently their catch line is “For Moms, By Moms”. Well, when I signed up for it a long time ago I sure as heck didn’t know that, but whatever.  It’s not one of the sites I visit regularly, but I do get their emails.  I got this discount code through an email this week and wanted to share it with you all. I used mine to get $6 off a 1-hour massage/chiro adjustment in South SF.

If you aren’t signed up yet, please follow this link so I get a bonus for referring you! Use promotional code “inwithnew” for 20% off any purchases this week.  This email was sent out yesterday, so I assume it’ll expire sometime Saturday or Sunday. Enjoy!

Potpurri for today…

Contests:

1.  Text “SLUMBER” to 80899 to win two tickets to the Giants vs. Pirates game on August 10th, and two tickets to the slumber party after!

2.  Text “KNBR” to 80899 to win…something. I got a fleeting glance of this one on a billboard on a passing Muni bus, so I dunno what it is! However, when I texted it  I did get an acknowledgement text back so it really is a contest 😛

Random iPhone/iPad apps:  You ever go on the app store just to surf and look at the apps that are out? I do…and here’s my sampling of some that I’ve seen over time that really make you believe in Apple’s catchline, “There”s an App for that!” (some ludicrous, some actually useful)

1.  Pimple popper: Yes, it really is what you think it is.  I found this one a few months back by perusing the most popular apps and this was one of them! Chris and I downloaded it just to see what it was all about. Apparently there’s whiteheads, blackheads, etc. that you are responsible for popping.  When it’s popped, the female goes “ahhhh” in relief. LOL. Needless to say we deleted that one right after trying it out.

2.  iAugment:  You can place breast implants on any body to see what that person would look like with a boob job. According to this article, you can even post the results on Facebook and show the world! How ridiculous!  Jezebel also did a piece on trying it out on a picture of Keira Knightley.

3.  Evernote:  I actually use this both on my iPad and the iPhone.  I like it because it you can type up notes and it’ll sync between your devices automatically as long as the device is connected either on the data network or on WiFi. It’s seamless and doesn’t require prompting.  If you’re not connected (let’s say on my iPad I’m not connected to a WiFi network) then it’ll wait until you are connected again and upload immediately when you are.  Very helpful for when you need to jot something down on the fly that you’ll need again. For instance, it’s a great one for jotting down your confirmation # for the upcoming flight you have. When it’s time to check in online, voila – there it is!  You can update notes if you need to add something. You can even add pictures and audio notes (haven’t done this yet so can’t speak to its usefulness). You can also share your notes via Facebook, Twitter, etc – it’ll create a public link for you.

4. Comic Book – I don’t actually have this one yet but I’m lusting after it.  It’s great because it works on both your iPhone and iPad (always looking for apps that do that because who the heck wants to pay twice? Or look at a tiny one on your big iPad?)  Use your iPhone pictures and transform them using comic book styling tools like borders, comic fonts, even page layouts.  According to the description, you can share your art via Twitter, email, and save them to your photo library.  It’ll go on my list of things to consider downloading and actually paying for.

5. Audible – So in another post I talked about doing audiobooks. I mostly listen to KNBR when I’m in the car. Once in awhile I turn on music stations just to “keep up” and not look ignorant when so and so says “have you heard that new _____ song?”  Sometimes when I feel like a change of pace, I hook up the Audible iPhone app on my iPhone or iPad. Super useful! We used it recently at Buster Posey Bobblehead day while we were in line.  Since the books are downloaded onto your device, there’s no lag. Awesome.

6. MyVibe – I’ll leave that one for you to look up. :O

7. Tiny Wings – Ahh, this game will always remind me of Reno 2011, when my friends and I discovered this horribly addicting game. You are a tiny bird trying to fly, and you use hills to help you gain speed and height.  The graphics are kind of old school, but I think it’s that simplicity that attracts me to it.

8. Pocket Penguins – Brought to you by the California Academy of Sciences, it is a video app that hosts a live video stream of their penguins.  You can look at the main room, the penguins underwater, as well as where the biologists are. Feedings are at 10:30 and 3pm PST.  Great for when you need something to soothe you 🙂

Friday Potpurri

Happy weekend!!

1)  “Man of the House” website.  The article I linked is particularly interesting, but they have articles on everything! And the contributors don’t sound like they have their heads up their asses…a big plus 😉 and plus, this website is great for a good laugh!

2)  Zito. ZITO!! My cousin and I briefly chatted about him during the game.  How many games til you can trust him on the mound? He’s doing great, but at the same time believe that every pitcher will have a melt down here and there. I want to keep cheering him on instead of waiting for the other shoe to drop, ya know? My cousin says he’ll never trust him but c’mon….give the dude some credit! We’ll see from start to start, I guess, but at least we are now getting some use out of him!  And how funny is it that everyone on KNBR/Twitter keeps commenting on the tightness of Barry Zito’s pants?  Anyone actually watching the game? 😛

3)  On another Giants note, what’s with all the injuries? Every time I think someone is going to get sent down to make room, someone gets injured! I thought Fontenot was going to be back but it looks like he’s day to day; I also assumed that with him coming back it would be Bill Hall who gets shown the door.  Then Bill Hall goes and gets injured, to the point where he might hit the DL. What the heck? Oh well…guess he ain’t takin up any room either way.  And about trades, this Mets series is going to be interesting to see Beltran in action.   Maybe it’s a good thing Jose Reyes got injured – for one, we don’t have to face him, and for two, maybe we won’t pay up the ass now for this guy who might not wanna sign here next year anyway.

4) Finally, ending with a lawyer joke…yay!!

A truck driver used to amuse himself by running over lawyers he would see walking down the side of the road. Every time he would see a lawyer walking along the road, he would swerve to hit him, and there would be a loud “THUMP” and then he would swerve back on the road.

One day, as the truck driver was driving along he saw a priest hitch hiking. He thought he would do a good turn and pulled the truck over. He asked the priest, “Where are you going, Father?”.  “I’m going to the church 5 miles down the road,” replied the priest.  “No problem, Father! I’ll give you a lift. Climb in the truck.”

The happy priest climbed into the passenger seat and the truck driver continued down the road.  Suddenly the truck driver saw a lawyer walking down the road and instinctively he swerved to hit him. But then he remembered there was a priest in the truck with him, so at the last minute he swerved back to the road, narrowly missing the lawyer. Even though he was certain he missed the lawyer, he still heard a loud “THUD.” Not understanding
where the noise came from he glanced in his mirrors and when he didn’t
see anything, he turned to the priest and said,

“I’m sorry Father. I almost hit that lawyer.”

“That’s okay,” replied the priest. “I got him with the door.”

So I disappeared for awhile…

So I disappeared for awhile, but here I am! And I am writing this as I listen to Tina Fey’s “Bossypants”.  Yes, she’s actually reading it. Awesome!! Blogging while listening to Tina Fey…oh my, that’s an interesting combination.

My “latelys”:

  • Drop Dead Diva.  Absolutely horribly trashy, very far from how the legal system actually works, but witty and look who can’t stop watching!
  • Watching (read: yelling at) my SF Giants as usual
  • Finding new recipes to try (Chris wants me to make this, something his mom used to make)
  • Planning our upcoming trip to Portland (attending a family wedding w/ Chris),
  • Killing flies that invaded our house during/after the BBQ we had. Where do they keep coming from?!?!?
  • Re-reading books from my youth. This is next – my original copy is so screwed up that the pages will start falling out soon
  • Responding out loud to talk radio when nobody else is in the room or the car…I’ll consider it good practice for oral advocacy.

So to make sure I don’t write more zany things by channeling Tina Fey, here’s my month of June in pictures.

Random Craigslist funny

I’m trolling Craigslist for a ticket for today’s game. Why not? I have nothing better to do. During my search, I came across this… don’t look if you are easily grossed out. There’s no picture but the post itself is….oh my.
